Righting Reading in Middle School: Readable English Helps Underperforming Adolescent Readers

This study measured the effectiveness of Readable English, a reading fluency and comprehension program, on underperforming sixth, seventh, eighth grade rural, American English-speaking students over course one school year. Students were randomly assigned to either intervention condition (n = 167) or typical practice 177). Middle in scored statistically significantly higher than measures EasyCBM CCSS Comprehension (partial η2 effect size [ES] 0.10 [moderate]), Passage Reading Fluency (PRF) rate (ES 0.18 [large]), PRF accuracy (ES= 0.08 WRMT-3 Oral 0.13 [approaching large]), 0.25 [large]). Moderate level growth oral led extensive skills. The eyewatering cost estimates accelerate remediation per middle student ($800 $3,800 student) paucity research-proven interventions require innovating ways combine leverage benefits technology intensive, effective curriculum instruction. data show that English is strong program able close gaps grow proficiency.
